The inauguration of an official soccer league in the City of St. John’s was on March 15, 1896. As there was no organized soccer of any kind at the time and because the game was played almost exclusively in the Capital, the organization was named the Newfoundland Football League.
The League remained under this name until 1949 when, due to the fact that soccer (then referred to as ‘football’) was being played in other parts of the island, it could no longer be rightfully called the Newfoundland Football League and so its name was changed to the St. John’s Football League.
While an official soccer league did not come into existence until the end of the 19th century, the roots of soccer in the Capital city can be traced back well into the eighteen hundreds. “Football” was introduced early and quite often by crews of visiting cargo and warships, by members of the British military garrisons and by other immigrants, particularly of European descent, who settled in the then British colony. It may even be that soccer was played during the 1700’s, again by British troops stationed in St. John’s. In 1878, the Terra Nova Football (Soccer) Club, the first organized St. John’s Club was formed and St. John’s intercollegiate soccer was first played in 1894.
Newfoundland Football League began its first season with seven teams in competition - Saints, C.E.I., K.A.C., Rovers, Star, Methodist Institute, C.L.B. The Saints went through the series without the loss of a game, and were only scored on three times. The League’s first playing pitch was at the intersection of Forest Road and Empire Avenue, in the area where the Anglican Cemetery is located, known as Llewellyn Grounds and owned by the Church of England.
The League remained in operation at Llewellyn Grounds until July 11, 1899, when it moved to the historic St. George’s Field, originally known as Lash’s Meadow, situated where St. George’s Court is located in the Parade Street- Merrymeeting Road- Newtown Road area. The first game was between the Saints and the Feildians, the Saints winning 6-2.
Soccer shared St. George’s Field with baseball and track and field but the popularity of soccer during the next 40 years had it as the dominating sport played at the facility. To help offset the operating costs an open-air rink was operated at St. Georges Field in the winter time - a highly profitable endeavor - starting in 1933 and continuing for the better part of a decade.
What is correctly termed the “most popular era of soccer” began in the late 1940’s when the Ayre Athletic Grounds were leased annually from the United Church School Board. The pitch was located between Freshwater Road, Adams Avenue, Pennywell Road and Linscott Street and provided an excellent opportunity for 500 or more fans to watch soccer nightly. It was at this stage of its history that St. John’s soccer drew the majority of its fans from the West End. Because the summer lease on the Ayre Pitch expired in early September, several seasons had the playoffs completed at Feildian Grounds, King George V Park and Pleasantville.
In 1969 the City of St. John’s constructed two side-by-side pitches at Wishingwell Park for use by the league. Thus the St. John’s Soccer League moved its operations from the Ayre Athletic Grounds to Wishingwell Park.
As the popularity of soccer in the Capital city grew so did the desire to play year-round. In 1975 an indoor league was started at the St. John’s Recreation Center. In 1976 the first soccer game under the lights, a match up between city rivals Feildians and Holy Cross, was played at Wishingwell Park.
1977 saw the first official female soccer being played in the city when the St. John’s Ladies Soccer Association was established. In 1983 they amalgamated under the wing of St. John’s Soccer Association.
Soccer fever was in full swing and the need for more quality facilities was never more apparent. In 2006 King George V was converted into the province’s first field turf pitch - a $3.5 million state of the art facility, with seating for 6,500, rated among the top five best soccer facilities in the country.
Whether it was friendly matches and multi-game series with visiting Navy ships; benefit games for ailing teammates; countless provincial titles and placements among the best in the country at national competition; or host to provincial, national and international play, St. John’s Soccer Club has remained dedicated to bringing quality soccer to the people of St. John’s.
While the Club itself has grown, evolved and undeniably dealt with adversity, two things have yet to change: residents of the city of St. John’s are fervent about the sport of soccer, among them passionate volunteers, who desire to see soccer flourish, have been the lifeline for a successfully run sporting organization that spans more than 100 years.
The Ayre Athletic Grounds was the prime location for St. John’s senior soccer, with some junior thrown in, for more than 20 years between the late 1940’s and 1970.
In 1923, Charles P. Ayre conveyed the "Ayre Grounds Property" to the United Church as a playground, sports and games field for the benefit of youth and athletes. The facility was controlled by the United Church and to a great extent by the Guards Athletic Association.
For many years, the Guards soccer and baseball teams used the property as a training or practice field. In the early eighties, the Guards obtained permission from the Avalon Consolidated School Board to improve the condition of the fields. In 1989, the Guards entered into an agreement with the school to control the operations of the Ayre Grounds Property.
The property consisted of two levels and also contained a house where the principal of Prince Of Wales College lived and the most westerly section is where the Prince of Wales Arena was constructed.
The Guards Association was founded in 1900 as the Epworth Guards Brigade. Six months after the formation, the name changed to the Methodist Guards Brigade. In 1921, the name became the Methodist Guards Comrade's Association and in 1926 when the Association was incorporated, the name officially became the Guards Athletic Association.
In addition to the Guards, St. Bon’s, Holy Cross, St. Pat’s and Feildians senior teams played at the Ayre Grounds. Mount Cashel had a team in early years while MacUnited competed for six years. Legion replaced St. Pat’s for two seasons and then became London Lions for four years.
Games were played on Monday, Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday nights and would attract up to 500 fans on a regular basis. Often, the League contract for the use of the facility would end prior to champions being declared and the season would finish at the Feildian Grounds.
Several times a year, exhibition (“friendlies”) games against teams from visiting ships would be played at the Ayre Grounds and after 1950, when the provincial organization was formed, provincial championship games would be played there. Junior soccer, under the “section B” title, was played for most of the years. Games, often three or four, were usually played on Saturdays. In addition to entries from the senior teams the CLB had junior teams for a few seasons
Soccer had to move away from the Ayre Athletic Grounds for a year (1963) and used low standard pitches at Buckmaster’s Field as well as King George V Park and Pleasantville.
Due to the excellent co-operation that the Guards Athletic Association has extended to the St. John’s Parks and Recreation Department, annually, approximately 2,000 young boys and girls have been provided with an opportunity to enjoy the great benefits of recreational soccer. An impressive grass roots program designed for youth between four and 17 years of age is available seven days weekly during the summer months, thus allowing all these young people to participate in a very worthwhile activity.
The City of St. John's assumed the operation of the soccer program in 2006 and moved to Ayre Athletic Grounds. The City currently runs a year-round program with approximately 2,000 youth participating in the youth house league program. It is a grass roots level program. During the summer the program utilizes the Ayre Athletic Grounds’ upper pitch seven days a week, in partnership with the Guards Athletic Association.
In 1968 the League moved to its new home at Wishingwell Park, situated on the corner of Empire Avenue and Stamp’s Lane where the City of St. John’s constructed two side-by-side pitches. These new pitches, together with pitches at King George V Park, Pleasantville and Gonzaga, resulted in a significant increase in soccer in St. John’s. In 1976 the very first lights were installed at Wishingwell permitting games to be played at night. Although senior soccer had moved to King George V Park, Wishingwell continues to play a major part in the St. John’s soccer picture.
In 1977 the City of St John’s hosted the Canada Summer Games. In preparation for these games, the King George V pitch received a major upgrade, including the installation of lights. By way of an agreement with Track and Field, the track at King George V Park was removed and Track and Field took exclusive use of the new Canada Games field. Since then, King George V has been the home of the St. John’s Senior Soccer League.
