[April 30, 2024] - ST.JOHN’S, NL - Fifteen teams will take to fields around the province this weekend, as an exciting new tournament kicks off on pitches from St. John’s to Stephenville. The NL Cup is a single-elimination tournament styled after the UK’s FA Cup, which will allow teams from different divisions to play against each other, without having to commit to a league for a full season.
In its first year, the NL Cup will feature teams from Intermediate to Masters and Challenge Cup. Top ranked Feildians, who are the defending Challenge Cup champions, have a bye in the first round.
“The beauty of the NL Cup is that teams from different divisions can test themselves against teams they wouldn’t ordinarily play against,” said Patrick Hickey, a member of the NLSA’s Competitions Committee and the tournament founder. “The schedule involves one single-elimination game per month, and can fit around the regular league season. We’re excited to have teams from Stephenville, Corner Brook and St. Lawrence involved this year, and look forward to adding a women’s cup tournament in the future.”
